The principles of Microsoft's Dynamics® Sure Step Methodology are based around the Project Management Institutes publication, ‘A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge’. This publication defines a set of guidelines and is internationally recognised as the de-facto standard for project management discipline.

Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step is a key part of the Microsoft Dynamics experience for both customers and partners. It provides a scalable, repeatable implementation methodology for Microsoft partners to use when implementing Microsoft Dynamics solutions.

By using a consistent methodology consisting of best practices gathered from Microsoft Dynamics implementations worldwide, Technology Management can reduce implementation time, cost and risk while boosting their consultants' productivity. For customers, Sure Step can provide structured implementation projects delivered by their Microsoft partners that are on-time, on-budget and on-spec.

Diagnostic Phase

The diagnostic phase starts during the Sales phase and ends with an accepted proposal and statement of work for the next part of the implementation project. The goal of the Diagnostic phase is to gather enough information in order to define the high-level project charter and make a confident proposal for the implementation phases. The major deliverable for this phase is the Statement of Work (SOW) and the Budgetary Estimate Proposal.

Analysis Phase

The analysis phase represents the official start of the implementation. This phase defines the activities required to initiate and effectively plan the entire project. The key objectives for this phase are to provide executives with an overview of the project vision, scope, objectives, KPI's and benefits. Also within the Analysis phase final approval will be sought for the schedule, milestones, resources, roles & responsibilities and deliverables. Kick off meetings with similar agendas are also conducted with the internal project team and with the customer project team members.

Design Phase

The goal of the design phase is to define how the business requirements will be implemented. The phase includes configuration of the overall solution and the design of specific customisations needed to satisfy business requirements identified during the Analysis phase. The customisations can range from simple user interface or report modifications to complex functionality additions or modifications, and may also include the integrations and interfaces and data migration elements required to support the requirements.

Development Phase

The goal of the development phase is to build and test the system components defined and approved in the design specifications, including developing the customisations, integrations and interfaces and data migration processes. The major deliverables include the complete system configuration, completion and freezing of code for customisations, integrations and interfaces and data migration. Other key deliverables include finalisation of the Solution Design Document and the completion of Data Acceptance, Process and Integration Testing.

Deployment Phase

The deployment phase is where all the efforts of the project team come together for a successful transition to the new solution. Key activities in this phase include End User Training, Performance Testing and User Acceptance Testing, and the actual cut-over to the new production environment.

Operation Phase

The operation phase defines the activities required to close the project, provide post production support and transition the solution and knowledge to the customer. Key objectives of this phase include providing post go-live support, transitioning the solution to support, performing a final quality audit, and project closure.
