Business Central how-to: resolving Production Order issues with the new reopen option

Reading time: 1 - 2 minutes

If you’ve ever completed a Production Order and then discovered that consumption was missed or incorrect tracking information was assigned to a component or finished item, we’ve got good news! It’s now possible to reopen Finished Production Orders.

This functionality enables you to verify and correct consumption, capacity and item tracking details, ensuring the costing of the finished item is accurate.

To begin, let’s navigate to the Finished Production Orders list, which can be found using the search functionality within Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Next, click into the Finished Production Order you wish to reopen.

From the Finished Production Order, select More Options > Actions > Reopen

When you select the Reopen option, the below dialogue boxes will appear; select Yes on both to continue.

When you choose Yes on the second dialogue box the reopened Production Order will automatically open as a Released Production Order, retaining the original document number. At this point we can now post further consumption, output and make changes to details such as item tracking, which would not have been possible against the Finished Production Order.

Once the changes you need to make are done, finish the production order again by selecting the Change Status option, then select Finished for the New Status and Yes

As you can see, this newer feature lets you resolve the many issues that can occur by finishing a Production Order before all related activities have been completed or when they haven’t been completed correctly. However, it’s important to know that Production Orders can only be reopened once. If you do attempt to reopen a Production Order that has previously been reopened, you’ll receive the below message.
